The Center, San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, Transportation for a Livable Community and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition are sponsoring the Central Freeway Demolition Celebration, Sunday March 30:

Demolition derby San Francisco is the city of the street festival, and as the barbecue season begins, neighborhoods and subcultures are starting to bust out with assorted block parties. Not your usual spring bacchanalia, the Central Freeway Demolition Celebration marks the beginning of the end for the Central Freeway (a.k.a. the Highway 101 Fell Street exit ramp), which was damaged by the Loma Prieta quake and is at long last being replaced with a four-lane, tree-lined road, to be completed sometime in 2004. Many local activists – those responsible for the grassroots organizing and passing of the three ballot initiatives to effectively win the tear-down-the-freeway battle – are honored during the afternoon festivities, which also include several bands, food stands, models illustrating the planned changes to Octavia Boulevard, and a gold sledgehammer for all present to take a symbolic strike at the old structure. 1-5 p.m., Market at Octavia (beneath the freeway overpass), S.F. Free
(For the next two years, there will be the sound of construction in my ears…I may go insane from this….)

Also being held inside The Center on this day, Phranc will be selling Tupperware as a fundraising event for the Gay Straight Alliance network. I saw Phranc in 1986 open for The Smiths when they toured for this album (and they kicked ass!- I even took a picture of Morrissey when he grinned at me- RARE photo indeed!). A friend and I went around to the backdoor of the venue in an attempt to catch members of The Smiths. As we had a door proppred open, listining to their soundcheck Phranc (and a girl-friend of her's) approached us and asked if she could get thru...we of course moved to the side of the door way so that she could enter. I had never heard of her, but soon discovered her strong voice. That was years ago, and her voice is still enough reason to go see her, but what an added bonus that you can also walk away with Tupperware!
